Arrests made last weekend drop
Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa, 05/05/2020
Police recorded an unexpected decline in the number of arrests made last weekend during their weekly operation.
The Acting Deputy Commissioner ‘Atunaisa Taumopeau says, most of the arrests were for breaching curfew hours including some claimed as essential workers.
More than 80 people were arrested during the operation last weekend compared to more than one hundred cases recorded on the week before.
‘Atunaisa says the decline in the number of arrests shows more people are complying with the restrictions imposed especially as some were eased, allowing night clubs to operate as well as the Tongan Kava Clubs.
He adds, as they recorded some essential workers abusing their IDs for Covid 19 for personal purposes, they’ve reported it to their respective ministries for immediate action.
Last week, some were using their IDs as essential workers as a pass to consume alcohol during curfew hours.
