TOP$460,000 grant from the ADB for TC Harold recovery

The Asian Development Bank have approved a 460,000 pa’anga grant to the Government of Tonga to help restore life-sustaining services following the damage from Tropical Cyclone Harold.
Regional Director of ADB’s Fiji Office Masayuki Tachiiri, says the grant aims to assist with Tonga’s recovery period following the damage recorded.
“ADB joined governments initial damage assessment, ADB has approved 200,000 USD grant which is approximately 460,000 TOP for the recovery. The fund will be used for restoration of basic social subsidies or the communities in affected areas. The recovery effort for Tropical Cyclone Harold was particularly challenging because of the various restrictions due to the COVID-19.”
Tachiiri commended the government for “conducting the damage assessments and starting the recovery effort quickly despite these challenges” adding that, “ADB will work further with the government and other partners to deliver the relief effort quickly for the people in the community.”
The estimated cost of damage from TC Harold is at 120million USD or 260 million pa’anga.
