As Govt prepares for deliberations on bills in Parliament next week, Minister of Infrastructure says two of the bills include safety of road transportation and traffic.
Hon. ‘Akosita Lavulavu says, following discussions with related stakeholders, govt hopes to enforce wearing of seat belt for drivers and the front passenger.
The bills will also prohibit drivers from using their phones for texting or calling while driving.
Traffic lights will also be implemented under these bills.
Minister says, the concern is because there have been many road fatalities in the past with hopes these bills will address the issue.
The bills would also allow foreigners to use their New Zealand, Australian and American drivers’ license in Tonga.
As the bills will be debated in Parliament, nothing has been confirmed yet.
Meanwhile ‘Oto Vuki, Mele Lama and ‘Ana Tonga fully supports the Government’s initiative saying it’s about time the government stepped up as road safety is a crucial issue in the country.
