National COVID-19 Restrictions to be reviewed
Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa, 21/05/2020
The National Emergency Management Committee will meet to review the national covid-19 restrictions tomorrow after concerns have been raised whether the restrictions in place are still necessary or not.
The Health Minister Hon. Dr. ‘Amelia Tu’ipulotu says the public have been cooperating well with Health officials since the restrictions have been put in place especially with practicing better hygienic lifestyle, maintaining social distance, and minimising mass gatherings.
The restrictions have been in place for almost two months now and many Tongan Kava Clubs, schools, churches, and work places, have installed more wash basins to help encourage good hand hygiene as recommended by the Healthy Ministry.
However, members of the public have voiced dissatisfaction with the restrictions remaining in place as it has affected the lives of many especially in terms of trade.
The review of the restrictions notice will not include the border closure as Dr. Tu’ipulotu is adamant that the borders remain closed because Tonga is not yet ready to start taking in passengers from abroad.
