The Tonga National Council for Churches are renovating three evacuation centres in Tonga; two in Vava’u and one in Ha’apai as part of their program to help communities prepare for natural disasters.
The work is carried out in partnership with Act for Peace where they will conduct training for about 9000 people living with disabilities on what they must do during a cyclone or in an event of a natural disaster.
The project will include installing water tanks on the most vulnerable communities to ensure they have access to safe drinking water.
The program is targeted at the most vulnerable areas to a disaster with monetary assistance received from the US government, through USAID.
