Environment week kicks off with tree planting programs

Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa, 01/06/2020

The environment is being celebrated this week with the theme – Protect NATURE, Respect BIODIVERSITY, Secure YOUR LIFE!

That is the theme the Environment Department of the Ministry of MEIDECC have chosen to emphasize in marking Environment Week here in Tonga and World Environment Day.

Despite the challenges in organising programs for the week due to the coronavirus restrictions still in place, Siosiua Latu from the Environment Department says they’ve focused on programs that can reach as many people as possible while at the same time keeping with the rules and restrictions imposed, as this week’s theme is an important issue for everyone.

Environment Week was officially launched yesterday with the Environment Department attending a combined prayer service at the Free Constitutional Church of Tonga and this morning continued with a tree-planting program at some schools around Tongatapu.

Latu says one of the reasons Environment Week is important is to re-emphasize to the public the importance of keeping the environment clean and healthy and to promote community action in regard to the environment.

Environment Week will run until Saturday, on which the Environment Department are planning a beach clean up to close out this important week.
