Speaker of Parliament dissatisfied with petitions submitted to Parliament

Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa, 04/06/2020

The Legislative Assembly of Tonga has received five petitions since the beginning of the year. Unfortunately, the Speaker says these petitions did not fulfil the requirements.

Lord Fakafanua then urges MPs to complete requirements needed before submitting a petition to the House as the Committee tasked with assessing petitions spent a lot of time evaluating it before reporting to Parliament.

Speaker did not provide more details about the petitions. However, the issue has been mentioned repeatedly during deliberations in the Whole House Committee from the table of the people’s representatives.

Meanwhile as Speaker ruled to continue discussions in the Whole House Committee this morning, Chairman Lord Tu’i’afitu acknowledged the significance of today June 4th which is the Emancipation Day. It is a public Holiday in Tonga but will be observed on Monday.
