State of Environment report launched at close of Environment Week

The Prime Minister this morning launched the country’s first State of Environment report compiled by the Ministry of MEIDECC’s Environment Department to mark World Environment Day and Environment Week here in Tonga.
The Prime Minister, Dr. Pohiva Tu’i’onetoa says the report that launched today is helping to improve the current situation of environment in Tonga.
The Minister of MEIDECC Hon. Poasi Tei, says, the food we eat, the air we breathe, the water we drink and the climate that makes our planet habitable all come from nature. It is therefore imperative that we care for nature in order to care for ourselves. He also emphasized that this State of Environment report is a baseline to continue monitoring and updating information as the environment continues to change under various pressures.
During the program, Fatafehi-‘o-Lapaha and the Prime Minister Hon. Pohiva Tu’i’onetoa planted two Heilala plants in the front yard of St. George building to mark the occasion and to close the National Environment Week for the year 2020.
The theme for this year’s program is “Protect Nature, Respect BIODIVERSITY, Secure your life!
