A 26-year-old man from ‘Eua, ‘Aleki Filikitonga was given a fully suspended 1-and-a-half-year prison sentence by Justice Laki Niu at the Supreme Court this morning for charges relating to the theft of 28,000 pa’anga from the Tonga Development Bank’s ‘Eua branch.
Filikitonga had pleaded guilty to the charges, admitting he had stolen the sum while he was acting director of the ‘Ohonua branch in January 2019.
The missing money was noticed by officials from the head office here in Tongatapu during a visit to follow up on the bank’s work at ‘Eua.
Justice Niu had taken into consideration the defendant’s guilty plea, having no prior record, and the evidence from the bank that the stolen sum had been repaid in full, and decided to have the sentence fully suspended.
However, if Filikitonga will be convicted of another crime within his two years’ probation, he will serve the full sentence.
