Government is planning on reopening the national museum in September, with the Ministry of Tourism hosting a 3-day workshop with some of the museum operators in Tonga this week to discuss the reopening of the national museum.
The workshop began this morning with the aim to discuss and establish a plan forward for this initiative to ensure that Tongan historical artefacts and important parts of our history, are preserved for future generations.
The Tourism Minister – ‘Akosita Lavulavu said this workshop was a good opportunity to hear from some of the local museum operators on how they have been able to maintain their museums and ways the national museum can improve when it reopens.
A Museum officer from the Ministry of Tourism – Milika Pomana says they have been set up a tentative time-table for the reopening of the national museum in September.
There are 3 museums all together in Tonga at the moment, 1 historical museum at Tupou College, and 2 tourism museums – Ancient Tonga at Fangaloto and Tonga Maritime in Kanokupolu.
