A 17-year-old boy from Ha’ateiho appeared at the Supreme Court this morning sentenced to 4 years’ imprisonment beginning today, with the last 12 months suspended for 2 years due to his young age.
The accused was charged with causing serious bodily harm to a boy from the same school he was in last year at Tonga College. The incident happened early last year in a school brawl between Tonga College and Liahona High School.
The 17-year-old first pleaded guilty to the charges but Supreme Court found him guilty after two days of trial.
The Court also received information from the Probation officer that there appears to be no sign of remorse from the accused.
The accused is charged based on witnesses in Court that he was involved in the school brawls.
The incident happened last year when the accused was still studying at Tonga College.
However, in his ruling, Justice Laki Niu says, because of the serious crime he committed, he must serve his 4 years’ imprisonment sentence at Hu’atolitoli Prison starting today with the last 12 months suspended for 2 years due to his young age.
