Extended Vaiola Hospital Laboratory sees local coronavirus testing possible

Coronavirus testing can now be carried out locally, boosting Tonga’s preparedness level for COVID-19. The Prime Minister marked the newly installed equipment at the recently extended laboratory at Vaiola Hospital this afternoon.
In his remarks, the Prime Minister – Dr. Pohiva Tu’i’onetoa says, this is an important milestone the Health Ministry has worked so hard for, and that the country remaining COVID-19 free is a good indication of the achievements of the ministry so far.
He acknowledged the ministry and taskforces collective effort that has enabled the Vaiola Hospital to have the capability to test locally for coronavirus, cutting the time and costs of getting tests.
Meanwhile, speaking to Radio Tonga news this morning, the Health Minister – Dr. ‘Amelia Tu’ipulotu talked about the benefits of being able to conduct COVID-19 tests here in Tonga, especially for those that will be repatriated from overseas countries.
The minister says they have carried out training with the health officials on how to operate these PCR machines.
