The governments website for registration of Tongans stranded abroad due to the border closure has recorded over 1,000 Tongans registering for repatriation flights.
The MEIDECC CEO – Paula Ma’u said the latest count this morning records over 1,000 people but registration is still open and they are anticipating the number to continue to grow.
The 50 passengers aboard the first repatriation flight has not been finalized, but Paula Ma’u says they are still working on carefully selecting the first group based on different criteria but they are looking forward to finalizing the preparations on the governments side, and having the first repatriation flight arrive successfully.
Meanwhile the two quarantine facilities that the government have approved are the Tanoa International Dateline Hotel and Kupesi Hotel, but Paula says the first group will be using Tanoa which is already being prepared to accommodate the quarantine passengers.
A 2nd drill for the arrival of the first repatriation flight is set to take place next week and Paula Ma’u says they will be looking at addressing some minor issues that they discovered after the first drill this week, and they are hopeful that this could reflect that the country is prepared for the first repatriation flight to finally take place.
