Western District’s underground water supply to be inspected monthly

The Ministry of Health will begin carrying out monthly inspections of the Western District’s Underground Water Supply after a survey in the area discovered e-coli said to be the result of leaks from septic tanks in the area.
The Health Minister – Dr. ‘Amelia Tu’ipulotu told Radio Tonga News this morning, these inspections are to monitor the quality of the underground water to ensure the people of Hihifo have access to safe and clean water and that they are not exposed to illnesses from the underground water.
If these inspections discover e-coli or other germs that pose a threat to the people’s health, the ministry will undertake a water purification project to clean the underground water.
This is because, Dr. Tu’ipulotu says they’ve carried out other surveys since the initial survey that detected e-coli in the water, and they have not seen any more e-coli in the water nor other causes for concern and so they will be carrying out these inspections monthly to ensure the underground water will stay clean.
The minister advised the Western District to boil the water before consuming.
