Tonga is now fully equipped to receive the first repatriation flight – this was the announcement from the Minister for Health this morning, saying in terms of health equipment and quarantine facilities, health officials are ready to welcome back passengers from abroad – beginning with Tongans stranded abroad.
More than 1,600 have now registered on the government website for repatriation from Australia, the United States, Fiji, and from European Countries, with the majority registered from New Zealand.
The Health Minister – Dr. ‘Amelia Tu’ipulotu says the country for the first group of repatriated Tongans to travel from has not been finalised but it is going to be either New Zealand or Fiji, but discussions on this are still underway.
The 50 passengers aboard the first repatriation flight has also not been finalised, but Dr. Tu’ipulotu says a team has been assigned to work on selecting the first group based on a number of criteria outlined by the ministry and government taskforce.
She says with the health officials prepared for the first flight they are looking forward to a successful first operation and hoping for more repatriation flights to continue after.
