PM launches PHAMA+-Program-supported Kava Quality Standard for Tonga

The Prime Minister yesterday launched the Kava Quality Standard for Tonga – a system for improving quality assurance and standards for Tongan kava to gain new access and maintain existing market access. This was compiled under the Pacific Horticultural & Agricultural Market Access – PHAMA Plus Program
In his remarks the Prime Minister – Dr. Pohiva Tu’i’onetoa acknowledged this special milestone for Tonga as kava is an important part of the country’s culture and tradition and has so much value for the people, and is now beneficial to the economy.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the importance of the Tongan kava to the country especially now during a time of difficulty with the coronavirus pandemic where it can be used to for financial benefit.
The Australian High Commissioner to Tonga – H.E Adrian Morrison also supported this initiative and said Tongan Kava would be more valuable for the country with the opportunities provided by this new Kava Quality Standard.
The Kava Quality Standard was made possible with the assistance of the PHAMA Plus Program who provide assistance to Tonga’s Kava Industry.
