Tonga Police records third death from sea cucumber diving

The third death as a result of sea cucumber diving has been recorded with the death of 60 year old Lokitone ‘Alamoni from Koloa, Vava’u.
Superintendent of the Vava’u Police Station – Taulangovaka Tapueluelu told Radio and Television Tonga News that the incident occurred in a small island near the coast of Koloa where ‘Alaimoni had gone diving with four other divers – on Monday evening.
He added that the four divers noticed ‘Alaimoni’s fishing spear floating and that he had passed away.
The 60 year old was then rushed to hospital but it was already too late.
Tapueluelu ended by urging all sea cucumber divers in Vava’u to take better precaution and preparation before setting out to sea.
A post mortem examination ruled the cause of death to be drowning.
