More people arrested with drugs

Police have arrested seven people from six different locations in Tongatapu and seized 4.96 grams of methamphetamine, 3.81 grams of cannabis, 8 cannabis plants, drugs utensils and cash.
Seven people have been charged to appear at the Magistrate Court at a later date.
Meanwhile, during a program last Friday the Acting Deputy Police Commissioner Tevita Vailea talked about the statistics of drugs seized by police since the establishment of the Drug Taskforce in April 2018.
He revealed that Police have arrested 561 people to date with 131 arrest of these made during the COVID-19 lockdown period, from March – June.
He also added that a total of 24% of these arrests were made within the last three months.
The youngest person arrested in this period was a 13-year old boy with the oldest being a 66-year old man.
Eighty percent of those arrests were male and 20% were female.
A total of 42.76 kg of methamphetamine and over 2.4kg of cocaine, 5.87kg of cannabis and to an approximate value of 12.3 million pa’anga and over 40 illegal fire arm and 1000’s of illegal imported bullets were seized from these arrests.
Meanwhile, Vailea is urging the public to assist them if they have any information regarding drug dealers or anyone with access to drugs to immediately contact the nearest Police station.
