Discussions underway for the repatriation flight from the Solomon Islands

The Government continues their discussion for the flight from the Solomon Islands expected for this week. This flight is expected to arrive in Tonga on Saturday.

The MEIDECC Minister who’s also the chair of the National Emergency Management Committee – Hon. Poasi Tei says, they are now looking into the route from the Solomon to also stop by Vanuatu as there are Tongan students there who have completed their studies however, discussions are underway with the church in charge of this chartered flight.

Hon. Poasi says, this flight is chartered by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day-Saints to repatriate their missionaries there where the government is also looking to repatriate stranded Tongans in Vanuatu and Samoa, as they are still COVID-19 free.

The time and date for the flight is yet to be confirmed but Poasi says, it will either be this week or the latest, next week.

Meanwhile, minor renovations are being carried out at the Makeke site in Vaini also the Taliai camp to house the repatriated passengers both from Fiji and the Solomon Islands.

The flight from the Solomon Islands has been put on hold for over a month now to allow the government enough time with the first and second batch of repatriated passengers, aiming to ensure Tonga still remained COVID-19 free.
