The primary schools in the outer islands will be part of the Ministry of Education and Training’s breakfast programme which began last weekend with 84 primary schools in Tongatapu.
This program held every Tuesday and Thursday aim at providing COVID-19 relief to encourage students to have breakfast that will physically maintain them throughout the day.
During a press conference last week, the Minister of Education – Hon. Siaosi Sovaleni says this program is not only for government schools but also the non-government schools.
Hon. Sovaleni added that it has been scientifically proven that children who have breakfast perform better in school, have better concentration and are more energetic.
He also added that the programme provides relief during Covid-19 especially as the students prepare for their examinations at the end of this month.
Sovaleni also mentioned that this is not the first time the government has offered Covid-19 relief to schools as they had granted schools with facilities such as washing sinks to promote good hygiene.
An estimate of more than 14,000 students are in primary schools in Tongatapu and the outer islands.
However, all schools will be closed tomorrow for the 2nd trial day of home school that will carry out on radio, television and internet.
