First woman to lead Whole House Committee discussions

This morning’s deliberations in the Whole House Committee was a milestone as it was the first time in Tonga for a woman to lead discussions in the Whole House Committee.

The Speaker of the Legislative Assembly nominated Tongatapu 5 MP Losaline Ma’asi the Acting Chairlady of the Whole House Committee effective from today.

Press Statement from Parliament states, the nomination is to enable the deliberations of the Whole House Committee as the Chairman Lord Tu’i’afitu is currently on leave.

Ma’asi was elected to Parliament in 2017, became the Minister for Internal Affairs in 2018, Minister for Agriculture in 2019.

Ma’asi is the Chairlady of the Standing Committee on Environment and Climate Change, a member of the Standing Committee on Agriculture and Fisheries and the Standing Committee on Population and Development.
