The Ministry of Education is currently working on a new curriculum for pre-schools that is expected to be implemented by the end of this year or early next year. The Ministry is currently hosting a one- week workshop for pre-school teachers in preparation for the new curriculum.
The workshop aims to provide teachers with the necessary skills and expertise in preparation for when this new syllabus will be implemented in the pre-school education system.
In an interview with Radio and Television Tonga News, the Head of the Early Childhood Education Unit – Soana Kaitapu says, this program is divided into four main modules. The first module is “making space and time for play” second is “child development” third is “positive guidance” and fourth being “working together with the community.”
This program was attended by different pre-school teachers including teachers from the outer islands; such as the education officer from the Vava’u group and the only male pre-school teacher in all of Tonga – Salesi Fusikata, who says they are delighted to join this program as it ensures a better future for the children.
He also urged more men take up the role of being a pre-school teacher despite it being a female dominated field.
Meanwhile the government has established a total of 18 pre-schools in Tonga.
The workshop training will conclude at the World Teachers Day this Friday.
