500 abacuses for primary schools

The Japanese government yesterday, donated 500 abacuses to the Ministry of Education and Training with the aim of strengthening primary school students that are taking part in the soroban education.
This grant is from Ono City in the Hyogo Prefecture, which has been assisting Tonga academically particularly through soroban education since 2010.
Attending yesterday’s program was the Japanese Ambassador to Tonga – HE Tetsuya Ishii who says, the 10-year anniversary of the Soroban competition in Tonga began from 2010 and is held annually in March.
However, the Ministry of Education and Training requested that this year’s Soroban competition be held in November which has been approved.
Also in attendance was the Education Minister, Hon. Siaosi Sovaleni who expressed his gratitude for the grant as it ensures a better education for the students.
This is one of many assistances offered by the Japanese government to Tonga since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries 50 years ago.
