The Ministry of Agriculture is trying to resume the export of watermelons to New Zealand before the end of the year.
Earlier this month, Tonga exported more than 50 tonnes of watermelon to New Zealand where fruit flies were found in this shipment. Due to fruit flies putting New Zealand’s agriculture at risk, their government suspended the export of watermelons from the kingdom.
The 50 tonnes of watermelon of exported from Tonga earlier this month is valued at $700 thousand pa’anga however all of these will be disposed of.
The Acting CEO of the Ministry, Mana’ia Halafihi emphasized the importance of related stakeholders working together to address the issue and prevent it from happening again in the future.
