Drunk driving major cause of road accidents in Tonga

Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa, 28/10/2020
The Head of the Road Safety from the Nuku’alofa Police Station Lemoto Piliu says most of the road accidents recorded this year is due to drunk driving.
Despite a decline in the number of road accidents this year compared to last year, there’s an increase in the number of road fatalities.
Last year, Tonga Police only recorded four but since January to date, six people have died due to road fatalities.
Lemoto said most of the cases are on Sundays, he therefore urged the people to keep Sabbath holy and avoid driving under the influence of alcohol.
Meanwhile during their daily operations, Lemoto says, there’s an increase in the number of people wearing seatbelts and a decrease in the number of public road offences such as driving while using a communication device and playing loud music from their vehicles.
