Government underway with efforts to cease cyber crime

Government is trying to control and manage problems of cyber crime despite the fact that it is almost impossible to stop or censor unregulated information published on social media.
CEO of Information and Communications (MEIDECC) – Paula Ma’u says, these challenges include the misuse of FACEBOOK to defame others as well as uploading inappropriate videos.
Paula Ma’u told Radio Tonga News they’re currently working with a special team of officials from the Attorney General’s Office and Tonga Police to draft regulations to be submitted to Parliament once it resumes deliberation next month.
However, Tonga has a regulation in place known as the Computer Crimes Act 2003 but additional regulations is required to be integrated into this Act, to combat cyber crime.
He also spoke of other efforts made by the Government to assure cyber-safety which includes the establishment of Tonga’s Computer Emergency Response Team or CERT to halt the problem.
Despite its operation at an early age but assistance from donor partners continue to pour in and the recent aid is a AUD$56,000 assistance from the Information Society Innovation Fund Asia (ISIF).
This assistance will help provide equipment to the CERT Office operating under MEIDECC.
