Deputy Prime Minister – Hon. Siaosi Sovaleni and the Bishop of the Catholic Church – Cardinal Mafi marked the completion of the first Habitat for Humanity home yesterday in Popua.
The pilot program aims for the people of Hala’ovave and Popua for they are the most vulnerable in times of disasters.
Speaking at the program, the Deputy Prime Minister says, this is a major step forward in developing resilience as well as addressing poverty alleviation.
The Chief Operating Office of Habitat New Zealand – Alan Thorp says that preparing communities with stronger and more safer homes would make them less vulnerable to the devastation of cyclone seasons.
There’s hope that 10 habitat homes could be built under this pilot program.
The initiative was a collaborative effort of the Government of Tonga, Habitat for Humanity Zealand, Caritas Tonga and Tonga Development Bank.
