Tonga will launch its first ever solar powered tuk tuk (vehicle) next week.
Tonga is taking the lead in the world in using such technology that only relies on the solar power operated by the Solar Island Technology.
This morning the Acting CEO of the Ministry of MEIDECC – Andrew To’imoana says, the initiative is to decrease the use of fossil fuels and carbon emissions.
In the past few years Tonga has been focusing on solar farm because of electricity but now the focus is on transportation.
Acting CEO says about 30% of the fossil fuels goes to electricity generation and 70% goes to transportation and other things.
The Managing Director of Solar Island Technology – Guido Schmitz- Krummacher says, the pilot program will commence with 12 solar tuk tuk, if the program runs smoothly they will continue with their initiative.
Solar Island Technology started their projects in Tonga seven years ago, and they installed various solar power projects in schools in Tongatapu, Vava’u and Ha’apai.
