The Members of the Tonga National Council of churches should open its doors for more discussions with the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex community (LGBTI) in Tonga. His Eminence Soane Patita Paini Cardinal Mafi made the challenge to church leaders.
Cardinal Mafi says more open discussions with the LGBTI would bring about a better understanding between their community and the church.
He adds, the basic essential thing is to make them feel accepted, they’re valued in their dignity as they are the persons of god.
This comes after a three day national consultations between the LGBTI and the church leaders and several Government Officials to accept them for who they are.
During the consultation issues raised are the abused faced by the LGBTI community at home, at school and at their community.
However despite the differences in the views between the LGBTI community and the church leaders but Henry ‘Aho of the Tonga Leiti Association told Radio Tonga this is not to legalize same sex marriage but to make their voices heard when it comes to them being abused because of their gender.
Meanwhile ‘Amini Fonua – Tonga’s long time representatives in Swimming to international sporting events and recently the Olympic Games in Rio said, we’re all equal under the eyes of the Lord and all they need is the love they deserve and the right they must obtain as human.
