Customs recorded high money collected in December

Customs Department recorded the highest amount of money collected in December last year (2016) with a new record of TOP$17,000,000. Minister of Revenue and Customs, Hon. Tevita Lavemaau said the estimate for the month of December was TOP$13,000,000 but Custom was able to collect TOP$17,000,000.
The normal average for the month of December in previous years was TOP$9,000,000 – TOP$10,000,000.
However last December, 5 shipping vessels arrived in Tonga during the peak season.
The shipping vessels were from New Zealand, Australia and America.
During the holiday season from 21st – 30th of December; Customs was able to collect TOP$6,000,000.
The shipping was for commercial and private use with the items mainly petroleum, furniture, food items and to name a few.
The shipment was for Tongatapu and Vava’u.
The reason for the hike in revenue collected were from the many shipments for the Christmas and New Year period and in Vava’u, St. Peter Chanel College was celebrating their Golden Jubilee with many ex-students from overseas attending the event with their shipments .
Hon. Minister said Custom’s Estimates for financial year 2015/1016 was TOP$115,000,000 and for 2016/2017 financial year, the estimate increases with about 11% to TOP$128,000,000.
