Town Officers are facing problems with ongoing delays of their salary payments

Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa, 03/02/2017

Majority of the town officers in Tonga are facing problems with the ongoing delays of their payments. Town Officer of Kolomotu’a – Sioo Tu’iano said they’ve been facing this problem since the beginning of this year.

They went to the bank to get their pay and they were told their payments are yet to be deposited.

Tu’iano said they were supposed to get paid on Wednesdays on a fortnightly basis, but they received it a week later.

This has caused delays in payment of their loans, delays in payment of electricity and water and sometimes their electricity and water systems were disconnected.

CEO of Internal Affairs – ‘Ana Bing Fonua apologized to all the town and district officers for the delay of their payments and said it was a technical problem and will never be repeated.

She adds, the delay was due to payment made to those who have worked as town and district officers for over 15 years.
