Tourism revenue target to reach USD$90 million by the year 2020

Tonga has doubled the earning goals for the Tourism Road Map 2014 from 45 million to USD$90 million by the year 2020.
The new target was presented at the industry’s retreat last month with hope it will play a bigger part in building a strong economy.
The new shift was based on the achievement of about TOP$80 million last year alone from tourism earnings.
Acting CEO of tourism – Sione Moala Mafi said, although the target is increased but they are looking at strengthening niche markets and developing news ones.
This includes infrastructure, hotels and empowering sectors that promote tourism especially tourists to visit the Friendly Islands.
Earlier reports from the Ministry said accommodation is no longer a problem but they look to increase Tonga’s occupancy rate which is currently below 50%
Some of the most important niche markets in Tonga include whale watching, MICE tourism which covers meetings, incentives, conference and events.
