The Honorable Prime Minister – ‘Akilisi Pohiva is representing Tonga at a 3 day High Level Study Visit for the Pacific Island States and Timor Leste in Singapore this week.
Information from Singapore’s Ambassador to Tonga. H. E Verghese Mathews said, the high Level Visit is to get an insight into Singapore’s experience in areas such as port management, water management, economic development, vocational education, public administration and tourism promotion.
Singapore’s Foreign Minister Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan said the small countries need to remain open and engaged with global networks if they are to survive and thrive, especially in the current world.
Dr. Balakrishnan noted that the 14 Pacific islands, Tonga included, Timor Leste and Singapore are similarly vulnerable owing to their openness and so much learning is needed to tackle these challenges in areas of common interest including climate change and sustainable development.
The program provided an effective platform for them to share ideas and experiences, and to foster strong camaraderie.
It is the second visit following the 2012 inaugural Singapore-Pacific Ministerial Study Visit.
Singapore will renew a special technical assistance programme for the Small Island Developing States grouping.
The programme comes under the Singapore Cooperation Programme, which trains foreign officials in areas such as human resource and economic development.
It has trained almost 5,000 officials from the Pacific island states and Timor Leste.
Attending the 3 Day High Level Visit are ministers and senior officials of the 14 Pacific island states and Timor Leste.
