Princess Latufuipeka received the Book: The Story of Fïnau ‘Ulukälala: Told by Iron Axe, in Tongan language

A new book – called “The Story of Fïnau ‘Ulukälala: Told by Iron Axe”, was presented to Her Royal Highness Princess Latufuipeka Tuku’aho – Tonga’s High Commissioner to Australia.
The foreword was written by THE Princess Latufuipeka and the first copy off the press was presented to her in gratitude by the author Dr. Nigel Statham who is married to a Tongan – Melenaite.
The book is a Tongan translation of an account of the natives of the Friendly Islands by John Martin and William Mariner.
The translation into Tongan was undertaken by the author for nearly half a century.
The original English edition was first published in 1817 with the help of Dr. John Martin.
A French translation appeared in Paris in the same year.
Mariner’s book has been called ‘a fantastic tale of adventure’ of an English boy of exceptional intelligence and personal attractiveness who at the age of 15 in 1807, having been marooned in Tonga.
He was adopted as the son of a high chiefly contender for the overlordship of those islands, Fïnau ‘Ulukälala, and named by him ‘Iron Axe.
