Deputy PM launched Tonga Climate Change Trust Fund

The Deputy Prime Minister who’s also the Minister of MEIDECC – Hon. Siaosi Sovaleni, on Friday launched the Tonga Climate Change Trust Fund.
The USD$5million fund is the outcome of a hard work by the Government of Tonga through MEIDECC and support from the Asian Development Bank.
Speaking during the program the Deputy Prime Minister – Hon. SiaosiSovaleni says, the vision through the Climate Change fund is to enable all communities in Tonga are further able to enhance their communal resilience to the effects of climate change.
“This process has been long and hard, but necessary to ensure that our country and more importantly the people and communities of Tonga, are the first to benefit from this fund. In saying this, I am very pleased to say, that this fund is not intended to be a one off event. The fund has been designed to grow, so that funds will be readily accessible every year starting from today”, says Hon. Siaosi Sovaleni.
Meanwhile the Senior Country Coordination Officer and Tonga Country Team Leader for the Asian Development Bank – Mr. TatafuMoeaki says, ADB is proud to support the move.
Tonga is the first country in the region to use the Tonga Climate Change Trust Fund.
Attending the program were cabinet members, district and town officers and related stakeholders.
