The New Finance Minister – Tevita Lavemaau appointed by the Prime Minister just last week says, he’s ready to take up the new post, but former Minister Dr. ‘Aisake Eke will still be recruited as an independent consultant for the preparation of the budget for the new fiscal year 2017-2018.

Hon. Lavemaau told media in a news conference last week that he already discussed the issue with the staff of the Ministry.

He said, this coincides with Government’s approval to outsource several major projects such as consultancy duties to outside contractors.

Contact has been made to the former Minister Dr. ‘Aisake Valu Eke for a comment, but he’s not available.

Dr. Eke prior to becoming Minister of Finance and National Planning, was former finance secretary for years before he resigned to run as a Parliamentary candidate for Tongatapu constituent 5 in 2010 and he won.

He was also elected people representative of Tongatapu 5 in 2014 with the highest percentage of voters –  voting for him.

More than 3000 voters registered in Tongatapu 5, but only 2898 casted their vote – where 1682 voted for Dr. Eke.
