Shortage of raw and white sugar in Tonga has seen uncontrolled rises in prices
Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa, 27/03/2017
Business groups or individuals are prohibited from imposing extra fees on the current price of sugar during this period of shortage of the commodity in mainly Tongatapu and Vava’u districts.
A spokesperson for Consumer Affairs, of the Ministry of Labour and Trade said, the public can file complaints if they find any shop selling sugar at an inflated rate than the amount currently imposed.
The normal price for raw sugar is TOP$2.50 and TOP$4.00 per kilogram for white sugar.
HOWEVER there are reports that some shops sell sugar at prices of TOP$3.00 per kilo for raw sugar and an extra pa’anga is added to the normal price of white sugar.
The main importer of sugar said this shortage is due to uncertainty of shipping schedules to Tonga.
A similar shortfall occurred last year, but there’s hope that the next shipment will arrive next month to alleviate the problem.
