Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa, 13/04/2017
A memorandum of understanding MOU to develop Marine Spatial Plan for Vava’u was signed this week.
Governor of Vava’u Lord Fulivai, executive director of WAITT a US company, Kathryn Mengerink and managing director Jacob James signed the MOU earlier this week.
Ailini Fonua of Environment Division says WAITT will provide scientific information and technical advice on the waters of Vava’u.
The information will also be given to the public through consultations for their opinion before a Maritime Spatial Plan is initiated for Vava’u only.
The findings will also identify the breeding areas and sea mining areas amongst others.
Those areas will be special with no fishing to encourage the breeding of sea lives.
The Vava’u Marine Spatial Plan is a component of the national marine spatial plan initiated by Cabinet to form a holistic plan for Tonga’s ocean.
