Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa, 23/05/2017
TASANOC and the Tonga PG’s Organizing Committee are still committed to host the Games in 2019.
In a meeting last night it was agreed that further dialogue with Government would be pursued.
A press release from TASANOC states more than 40-odd delegates from seventeen National Federations agreed to this decision.
Similar decision was made by the Organizing Committee last Friday.
The acting Chair, Lord Vaea says sports is an important and a priority factor in the life of the people.
He added, it is further important that the Government honor its commitment as host government contained in the host contract agreement signed in 2012 between the Pacific Games Council, the Tongan Government and TASANOC.
Secretary General of TASANOC – Takitoa Taumoepeau says if finance is the problem it is important that the Government are aware that Tonga can still host the 2019 games with the current facilities.
He says with 26 sports to be conducted in 2019 – 10 indoor sports can be conducted with Tonga’s current facilities with only a few renovations.
