God First group calls on government to revoke the Foreign exchange levy and departure tax Act
Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa, 08/06/2017
A community group “God First” has called on the prime Minister and Government to revoke the Act which has allowed the collection of levies on foreign money exchange and departure tax towards the 2019 Pacific sports.
The group pointed out that the collection of revenue from the imposition of these taxes continues despite the cancellation of Tonga hosting the games.
If this will continue, the group proposed that a forum should be held for consultation between various bodies including cabinet, parliament, TASA NOC, OC 2019, youth of tonga, church leaders, Business community, monetary foundations as well as God First group.
The forum should discuss frankly what is in the best interest of the people and country in general, for Tonga to reassess its stance on the 2019 sports hosting or to continue with government’s decision.
Details of an analysis of the sports budget and supporting statements are presented along with the group’s petition.
