About TOP$595.8 million allocated for the 2017 – 2018 estimate

About top$600 million has been proposed by Government for the 2017 – 2018 fiscal year.
The Minister of Finance – Hon. Tevita Lavemaau told Parliament yesterday the estimate includes cash of about TOP$380 million and just over TOP$200 million in kind assistance.
About TOP$350 million of the estimate is Government’s funding and TOP$250 is from development partners.
Ministry of Education is allocated with the highest share of TOP52.6 million.
The Ministry of Health’s vote has also increased to about TOP$40 million of which 10% will be allocated to the fight against Non-Communicable Diseases.
He adds, by June 30th Tonga has a total loan of about TOP$470 million which is the equivalent to 52% of the Gross Domestic Product.
Majority of that loan is what Tonga owed to the Exim Bank in China for the construction of Nuku’alofa after the 16/11 riots.
During last night’s deliberations the Committee of the Whole House passed to repeal the 2019 Sports Act 2013.
This morning’s sitting continued with deliberations on the draft budget.
