Catholic Church celebrated its 175th anniversary in Tonga with a mass

Hundreds of members of the Catholic Church in Tonga gathered at Pangaimotu yesterday to celebrate its 175th anniversary with a mass.
Priests from all parishes in Tonga, nuns, elderlies and youth members attended the occasion.
The mass was led by the Catholic Bishop Diocese of Tonga and Niue – His Eminence Cardinal Mafi.
Fr. Newcastle Niukapu from the Church said, since 1842 the Diocese of Tonga had accomplished great achievement such as the appointment of the first Tongan Cardinal, the establishment of the Catholic Schools and its charity program to assist poverty in Tonga.
Part of the celebration was laying of wreathes at the Royal Tomb – Tofaa Ua in Lapaha, Pea and Kalevalio Cemetery in Ma’ufanga.
The first Catholic Mass in Tonga was in Pangaimotu on the 2nd of July 1842 by missionaries from France.
