Medical experts are examining the hearts of young children

A team of medical experts from the Ministry of Health and abroad are currently examining the hearts of young children between the ages of 5-15 at all Government Primary Schools in Tonga.
A member of the Team – Dr. Toakase Fakakovikaetau said, the visit is to detect heart diseases at a young age and to find early treatment.
Annually, about 6000 children with about 250 are being diagnosed with heart problems that are unknown.
About 3 children annually are further required to undergo further examination and treatment after they reach the age of 21.
Dr. Fakakovikaetau said, the main causes of heart diseases are from cold that begin with a simple throat pain.
The program has been ongoing for 11 years with experts from Fiji, New Zealand and Australia conducting the heart examination and is being funded by the Government of Australia.
