Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa, 21/07/2017
The people of Kolomotu’a last night proposed to their representative to parliament to increase the number of representatives to parliament from 26 to 30 and 4 be allocated for women.
Sela Vete of Kolomotu’a says there are many successful women in Tonga that can be in parliament but do not stand the chance of winning over a male dominated structure.
She believes, the number of crimes committed are on the rise and are mostly done by men therefore parliament should address this issue.
Hon. ‘Akilisi Pohiva supported the idea and said if the number of MP’s increase from 26 to 30 then they will have 21 seats but at the same time this will enable the noble’s to request for more seats.
Other issues raised during the consultation includes how the town councils manage their constituency fund.
