Tonga’s pregnancy rate 30 births per 1000 girls.

The Director of Health – Dr. Siale ‘Akauola has urged the need to address adolescent pregnancy as the current rate is 30 births per 1000 girls aged between 15-19.  ‘

 

He noted two challenges arose from this statistic, it encourages young women to drop out of school and the children will be impacted by a challenging environment throughout their development.

 

Dr ‘Akau’ola urged participants to take into consideration the healthy island key themes in their reviews.

 

He made the comment while opening the workshop on family planning guidelines and sexual reproductive health policy with the UNFPA’s mandate, to ensure that every pregnancy is wanted, every birth is safe, every woman and girl is treated with dignity and respect and every young person’s potential is fully realized.

 

The workshop aims to ensure documents are well integrated with the Tonga Strategic Development Framework II, National Strategic Plan and the Sustainable Development Goals.

 

More than 30 people are participating in the training.
