Growers urged to cultivate wisely

Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa, 26/07/2017

The CEO of Agriculture – Dr. Viliami Manu has urged growers to cultivate wisely and to reduce the quantity of their agricultural crops as Tonga prepares for another El Nino event by the end of the year.

He said, growers need to learn from the 2014 impacts of El Nino that resulted in a huge drop in the export of squash and yam and the death of many livestock animals.

The Regional MET office predicted that land will be drier towards the latter part of the year as the EL NINO begins to impact Tonga.

A new research said that Pacific nations will become more vulnerable to the effects of climate change in the future.
