The next step is to install the cable on the seabed and connect it to the islands of Ha’apai and Vava’u to ensure faster internet to all.
It’s understood that he Government is selling the share to avoid lending from other parties.
The fund presented today will be used for the connection of cable together with 4 million pa’anga from the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank.
CEO of MEIDECC Paula Ma’u says the total purchase is to the tune of about 8 million pa’anga.
Currently Digicel and TCC have a share of 16.6% each in Tonga Cable.
CEO of Digicel Ben Kealy says their move is to ensure better connection with the outer-islands.
“The basic is to provide better services to the outer islands of Vava’u and Ha’apai and faster and more reliable connectivity to the outer-islands especially during this peak season up until October I think”
