Considerable number of children ranging from 5 to 18 year olds are school drop outs in Tongatapu electorate 2.

A survey recorded that a large number of children between the ages of 5 – 18 in parts of Tofoa and Havelulotu have dropped out from school.
Statistics have shown that just over 200 or 28 % have dropped out with almost 750 at Haveluloto are still attending school.
In Tofoa the figure is 9 students our of 76 have dropped out representing 12 percent. .
The Education Act stipulates that it is compulsory for children between the ages of 4 – 18 to attend school.
This survey shows that this law is not enforced by some families due to financial problems where parents cannot afford their children’s school fees.
After all the Government Primary School is a free education service for all children, except Tonga Side and the Secondary Schools.
The survey was conducted to 315 homes in Haveluloto and 35 homes in Tofoa.
