Attractive monetary packages offered by government, is the best bait for overseas based rugby players
Radio & TV Tonga, Nuku’alofa, 07/08/2017
Lord Tu’ilakepa called on Government in parliament this morning, to increase monetary assistance to overseas based rugby players to represent Tonga at the 2019 World Cup.
He said it is about time Government raise its contribution to draw their attention because Tonga will compete with mainly tier one teams in pool C.
In response the Prime Minister said there is money but government is not responsible to all sports bodies in Tonga.
He said a previous request was made from the Australian Football League and the Taekwondo’s local federation but was refused.
The Prime Minister said there are several standards to meet before qualifying for any financial assistance from Government.
Lord Nuku then asked the Prime Minister to clarify the standard used to cancel the 2019 sports but to support the general development of sports in Tonga.
However, Tonga’s hope to bring players who are currently playing for international teams is crushed by their rules that players can play for their teams of origin according to a specific time game.
Another requirement includes competing in the Olympic Games representing their country of origin to allow them to play for them.
