‘Epele Sekeni – A former teacher from Haveluloto raised concern over teaching of the English subject starting from class 3 instead of class 1 in Primary Schools.
He believes this weakens student’s abilities to learn, write and speak in English.
English is being introduced orally at class three and the written curriculum for the subject commences at class 4.
The move was the result of the Tonga Education Sector study conducted by UNESCO which recommended the change and the curriculum was trialed for 2 years in 2009 and 2010 before it was implemented in 2011.
The survey stated minority languages and mother tongues should be prioritized and taught first before any additional language including English.
The President of the Friendly Island Teacher’s Association – FITA – Finau Tutone if people need a change the matter could be referred to the Ministry for any decision regarding such matters will have to be approved by cabinet before implementation.
Any change to an educational policy is based on research or study because many people are affected if issues are not consulted and fulfill due process before implementation.
